Black Island Winery: The revival of Posip on the island of Korčula
Black Island Winery, located in the quiet cove of Smokvica on the island of Korčula in the Adriatic Sea, was once a cooperative winery specialising in local grapes. In 2018, a new winemaking story began at this location. The aim was to reevaluate the historic land and the traditional grape variety Posip, and to reconstruct winemaking that makes use of the island's climate.
The winery's name, "Black Korčula," comes from the island's ancient name, and pays homage to the island's rich Mediterranean climate, nature, and long history of grape growing.
The vineyards are located on the cliffs and slopes close to the beach – terraced fields where Posip has traditionally been grown. Carefully tended for generations by small-scale local growers, the grapes are hand-picked at dawn on harvest day. From harvest to winemaking, meticulous care is taken to preserve the freshness and character of the grapes.
The winemaking focuses on the region's indigenous white grape, Pošip, and aims to express Korčula as a collection of diverse terroirs. Their signature cuvée, Merga Victa Pošip, reflects the island's sea breezes, calcareous soil, and long history of viticulture. Its flavor, which spreads with nuances of fresh citrus, Mediterranean herbs, stone fruit, and minerals, leaves a refined, lingering finish. Enjoyable from a young age, it also ages well.
Visitors are offered a wine experience accompanied by modern tasting facilities and local island cuisine and snacks. The Black Island's charm is that it allows visitors to experience not only wine but also the whole "Korčula-ness" including lifestyle, culture, and nature.
Combining old traditions with new ventures, this winery is one of the driving forces behind Croatia's wine revolution. Every drop reflects the future of Posip and Korcula, and is packed with island pride and quiet passion.
