Hermanos Hernáiz Estate: Rioja History and Innovation in the Footsteps of an Empress

Located in Baños de Rioja, Rioja Alta, Spain, the estate is situated at an altitude of approximately 570-600 meters and is centered around the ancient single vineyard, "Finca La Emperatriz." The estate's history dates back to Eugénie de Montijo, the last Empress of France and wife of Napoleon III. In 1878, the Empress presented a wine made from grapes from this vineyard at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where it won an award—an accolade that was testament to the site's potential and uniqueness.

The estate changed hands many times over the years, but in 1996, Eduardo and Victor Hernaiz took over this historic estate, determined to restore it to its former glory. Drawing on their family's experience of owning vineyards in Cenicero, Rioja for generations, and adding vineyards in Rioja Alta such as Fuenmayor, Navarrete and Hornos de Moncalvillo, they are committed to producing wines that combine tradition with innovation.

The vineyards are made up of sandy loam soil with good drainage, and the vines, spread across steep slopes, are managed by hand with low yields. This allows the grapes to retain their distinct character and the wines to faithfully reflect the voice of the land. All of the estate's wines are bottled in-house, ensuring that the character and history of the land are imbued in every drop.

Empress Eugénie de Montijo's beauty, elegance, and foresight had a profound impact on society at the time. She was active in many fields, including wine, laying the foundations for brands such as Louis Vuitton and Guerlain, supporting Louis Pasteur's research, and investing in the Suez Canal project. Her spirit continues to this day in the Hernaiz family, who respect history while pursuing innovation.

Since 1996, Eduardo and Victor have focused on restoring the vineyards and meticulously studying the characteristics of the terroir. Understanding the potential and history of the land, they continue on a path to producing high-quality wines by incorporating innovative techniques while respecting tradition.

Philosophy

The Hernaiz family crafts wines that accurately and carefully reflect the unique characteristics of each vineyard, with respect for the land, the use of old vines and sustainable cultivation at the core of every step.
