Rocche dei Barbari: an artisanal winery rooted in the history of Barbaresco
Located in the historic heart of the village of Barbaresco in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Rocche dei Barbari is a family-run winery with a history spanning centuries. Established in the 17th century, this prestigious winery, located in a square overlooked by Barbaresco's medieval towers, produces wines with quiet pride and unwavering tradition. The winery's name comes from the "Rocque" (cliff) where their vineyards are located. This historic vineyard, located atop an impressive cliff overlooking the Tanaro River, is a special plot that has been passed down through generations. Nurtured by the intense sunlight and gentle night breezes, the grapes absorb the power of the four seasons and reflect the unique characteristics of the terroir. In 1974, the family began specializing in winemaking using grapes from the Rocche vineyards, and launched the wines bearing the name "Rocche dei Barbari." True to traditional methods, the grapes are harvested at full ripeness, often until the end of October, to maximize the concentration of the fruit and the complexity of its aromas. The wines are aged in old, neutral wooden barrels or cement tanks, allowing them to mature naturally without rushing. After a minimum of five years, and for the Riserva wines over ten years, the wines acquire structural complexity and purity, allowing the individuality of each vintage to be sublimely expressed. Representative wines such as the Alivio Barbaresco Riserva and the Langhe Nebbiolo have aromas of sour cherry, dates, and subtle brown spices, and are characterized by their elegant structure and long finish. The tannins soften and blend with age, revealing even greater depth with time. Their boutique in the heart of Barbaresco offers a magical atmosphere with soft lighting, brass and velvet, a mix of modern and antique elements, where rare wines can be tasted and purchased exclusively by an exclusive clientele who come from all over the world to discover this wine. Rocche dei Barbari wines are truly special, rarely found in restaurants or wine shops. They value the intimate relationship they have with their customers, and infuse every drop with tradition, craftsmanship and a deep respect for the Barbaresco land.
